Kiribati, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS),  lies in the equator, a remote country of 33 scattered coral atolls, 21 of which are inhabited.  This small area of land dispersed throughout the 3 millions square kilometers exclusive economic fishing zone.  There are three groups:  Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Groups are under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Kiribati.  Tarawa Island is the administrative Centre within the Gilbert Group, a flight of 3 hours to Nadi, Fiji.  The growth centre Kiritimati ( in the eastern direction of Tarawa Island) in the Line Group will take 3 hours to fly to Honolulu in Hawaii.  Almost all islands in the Phoenix group have no inhabitants.  The island, Caroline, in the Phoenix group is one to see the first sunrise in this new Millennium.  Kiribati was designated a "least developed country" by the European Community in 1979 and by the United Nations in 1987.  Kiribati was recently a member of the United Nations 1998.
